OTTER SPOTLIGHT: Chol Deng

Meet the senior forward from Australia

January 22, 2026

SEASIDE, Calif. — When Chol Deng arrived at Cal State Monterey Bay, he immediately felt the energy that would define his experience as an Otter. "Definitely the vibe and energy of the place—who wouldn't want to be in Monterey Bay?" Deng said. "The basketball team felt like the perfect fit from the very first day."

It didn't take long for Deng to realize he was exactly where he needed to be. The campus atmosphere, the coaching staff, and the team's culture all aligned with his goals on and off the court, setting the stage for a memorable collegiate career.

One game in particular stands out for Deng as a turning point in his journey. "During our win against Cal Poly Pomona (a 79–75 win on Jan. 8), I truly felt the team's energy and unity," he said. "Everyone was having fun and playing selflessly for each other. Watching everyone succeed together in that game made it my favorite college playing experience so far."

That moment captured what Deng values most about basketball—playing for something bigger than himself. The team's chemistry and trust were on full display, and it reminded him why he fell in love with the game in the first place.

After spending time at a Division I school and junior college, Deng found a new rhythm academically at CSUMB. "The classes here focus more on teamwork and applying what we learn to real-life situations," he explained. "The teachers have high expectations, but there's also plenty of support like tutoring to help students succeed. This has helped me improve and feel more confident in my studies."

That support system allowed Deng to grow both as a student and as an athlete, giving him the confidence to excel in all areas of his life. It also reinforced the importance of balance, discipline, and perseverance—qualities that translate seamlessly to the basketball court.

Now in his second season with the Otters, Deng has seen significant growth in his game. "I came in working hard all offseason, knowing my role and what I was going to get into," he said. "Trusting in the coaches' ability gave me the confidence to elevate my game to a whole new level. Learning the game every single day, watching more basketball, and studying film—that's what elevated my game."

His dedication is fueled by a clear goal. "My goal is to become the best defensive player in the conference," Deng said. "I believe I can achieve this because I have an amazing team and outstanding coaches who believe in and trust every player." That belief drives him to bring energy and effort every time he steps on the floor.

Deng's ambitions extend beyond the hardwood. Inspired by the loss of his father, he launched a clothing line called "Komfy." "My dad passing away was a huge moment that inspired me to think outside the box and create something meaningful," he said. "It's all about feeling good and confident in your own vibe."

Looking ahead, Deng has big plans for his future. "After I'm done with basketball, I want to become a real estate agent," he said. "Hopefully after a few years, I want to own multiple houses and be a landlord. And maybe become an agent if I want to go back to basketball—because I know there are people out there that can help."

From the classroom to the court to his entrepreneurial pursuits, Deng is building a foundation for success that goes far beyond the game. With his work ethic, vision, and the community he's found at CSUMB, there's no limit to what he can achieve.
