Otters Hold Off Late Pomona Rally, Win 79–75

Mora leads four Otters in double-figures with 24 points

POMONA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay opened a big lead midway through the second half then held off a late Cal Poly Pomona rally to earn a 79–75 win Thursday night in Kellogg Arena.

The Otters improved to 9–4 overall and 4–3 in CCAA play. Pomona dipped to 8–5 and 3–4.

CCAA leading scorer Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) led four Otters in double figures with a game-high 24 points. Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) added five 3-pointers and 19 points. Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian HS) chipped in 18 points.

But man of the match honors went to senior Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW/Greyson CC), who posted his first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while passing a game-high six assists.

CSUMB led by just two at the half, 36–34, but never trailed in the second half. The Otters opened their first double-digit lead at 53–42 on a Bilello 3-pointer less than eight minutes into the final period. They claimed their biggest lead three minutes later when a Mora lay-up made it 63–48.

The lead stay between 10 and 13 points for most of the balance of the game until a Bronco charge in the final 90 seconds got them to within 78–75 with 21 seconds remaining. That, however, was as close as they would get.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. That moment didn't come until Ariya Briscoe grabbed the rebound of a Zach Broadous missed 3-pointer with one second remaining.

ROAD SWEET ROAD: After falling by two points last Friday at Stanislaus State, the Otters bounced right back into the road win column with a pair of away victories, including Thursday's 79–75 win at Cal Poly Pomona. Their 5–1 road record is their best road start ever through six games.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: After committing a season-low seven turnovers in their 2025 finale against Cal Poly Humboldt, the Otters turned the ball over just 11 times while starting 2026 last Friday at Stanislaus State and 10 times Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona. Those are their three lowest turnover totals of the seasons.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits In Thursday's win at Cal Poly Pomona. This time, the honors went to: Michael Mora (24), Joey Bilello (19), Jaden Tengan (18) and Chol Deng (10). It marked the 19th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures.

QUADRUPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Thursday win over Cal Poly Pomona marked the seventh time in 13 games this season that at least four Otters have scored in double digits.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: Of the 10 Otters who have seen action in at least two games this season, nine of them have registered at least one double-digit scoring game.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB: Chol Deng became the third Otter this season to record a double-double when he registered his first as an Otter with 10 points and 11 rebounds in Thursday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. He joins Mezziah Oakman and Michael Mora in that exclusive club.

TENGAN APPROACHES 900-POINT MARK: With 18 points in Thursday's win over Cal Poly Pomona, Jaden Tengan raised his career scoring total to 891 points, good for 12th place on the CSUMB career scoring list. He is the 15th player in Otter history to surpass 800 points. He'll enter Saturday's game at Cal State San Bernardino needing 18 points to catch Ryan Nitz for 11th and 19 to catch Evan Zeller for 10th. In case you're wondering, Alex Fertig (2012–16) owns the Otter career scoring record with 1,370 points.

MORA JUMPS FOUR SPOTS ON CAREER SCORING LIST: With a game-high 24 points in Thursday's win at Cal Poly Pomona, Michael Mora jumped four spots, from No. 30 to No. 26, on the Otter career scoring list with 547 points. He passed Greg Polosky (525), Will Brown (537), Dante Green (538) and Joe Wall (542). He needs nine points to pass Charlie Tooley for No. 25.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Michael Mora 24; REBOUNDS: Chol Deng 11; ASSISTS: Chol Deng 6; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello/Ariya Briscoe 1 1; STEALS: Joey Bilello/Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4-game CCAA roadtrip with a visit to Coussoulis Arena to take on Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
