San Bern Holds On At The Buzzer, 85–84

Mora scores 26 points, Tengan adds 23

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — For the second consecutive year, victory at San Bernardino eluded the Cal State Monterey by a single point as the Coyotes held on at the buzzer for an 85–84 win Saturday in Coussoulis Arena.

CSUMB got 26 points from Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) and 23 from Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian HS), but Ariya Briscoe's (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) desperation prayer at the buzzer wasn't answered, allowing San Bernardino to escape.

The game was every bit as close as the final score indicated as the teams played through nine ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than the 9-point (22–13) advantage CSUMB held midway through the first half.

A pair of Mora free throws tied the game at 81–81 with 45 seconds remaining. San Bernardino's Zion Paleo broke the tie with a jumper 23 seconds later and a pair of free throws extended the Coyote to 85–81. Tengan came down and buried a three to make it a 1-point game, but the Otters didn't get the ball back until their were just five-tenths of a second left, and no miracle was to be on this Saturday.

Mora added 10 rebounds to complete his second collegiate double-double. Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) chipped in 11 points while Chol Deng (Sydney/NSW/Greyson CC) just missed his second consecutive double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday, that moment didn't come until the clock showed four zeroes.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: The Otters continue to take magnificent care of the rock over the last month. Saturday, CSUMB matched its season low with seven turnovers at Cal State San Bernardino. CSUMB's four lowest turnover totals of the season have come in the last five games.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino. This time, the honors went to: Michael Mora (26), Jaden Tengan (23) and Joey Bilello (11). It marked the 20th consecutive game that at least three Otters have scored in double figures.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: Of the 10 Otters who have seen action in at least two games this season, nine of them have registered at least one double-digit scoring game.

TENGAN CRACKS TOP 10 IN SCORING: With 23 points Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino, Jaden Tengan raised his career scoring total to 914 points, good for 10th place on the CSUMB career scoring list. He became the 12th player in Otter history to surpass 900 points. He'll enter the week needing 32 points to catch D'Shon Cannon for ninth place and 36 to catch Davion Berry for eighth. In case you're wondering, Alex Fertig (2012–16) owns the Otter career scoring record with 1,370 points.

MORA CRACKS TOP 25 ON CAREER SCORING LIST: With a game-high 26 points Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino, Michael Mora passed Charlie Tooley to crack the CSUMB career Top 25 with 573 points. He needs 12 more to pass Koen Sapwell for 24th place.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Michael Mora 26; REBOUNDS: Michael Mora 10; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 3; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello/Michael Mora 1; STEALS: Chol Deng/Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT: The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to host defending CCAA and West Region champion Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday (Jan. 15). Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
