Tengan’s 27 Not Enough Against Defending Champs

Jaden Tengan pours in 27, but Toros prevail 90-77

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay fought its way out of an early hole, but defending CCAA champs Cal State Dominguez Hills kept the Otters at arm's length throughout the second half to earn a 90–77 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Junior Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) poured in a game-high 27 points—including a 6-for-7 night from long range—to lead four Otters in double figures. But Cal Poly Humboldt transfer Josiah Sanders led five Toros in double figures with 25 points to offset Tengan's big game.

Dominguez Hills raced to a 9–0 lead in the first three minutes. It didn't take long for the Otters to right the ship, however, when an Ashton Reese (Scottsdale, Ariz./UMBC) 3-pointer capped an 11–2 run that knotted the score three minutes later.

The Toros eased away from that point, slowly growing their lead to 19 points (65–46) midway through the second half. A Tengan steal and Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) layup cut the deficit to eight points with 4:34 remaining, but that is as close as the Otters would get.

In addition to Tengan, Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW) scored 13 points with a game-high seven rebounds. Michael Mora (Palo alto/Univ. of Vermont) add 11 points, all coming in the second half.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when a Josiah Sanders second-chance dunk gave the Toros an 81–67 lead with 2:11 remaining.

THE ROARING '20s: Jaden Tengan matched his season high with 27 points Thursday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. It was his fifth 20-point game of the season, tying Michael Mora for the team lead in that category.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Thursday versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. This time, the honors went to: Jaden Tengan (27), Chol Deng (13), Michael Mora 11) and Miki Gacic (10). It marked the 21st consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

QUADRUPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Thursday's game against Cal State Dominguez Hills marked the eighth time in 15 games this season that at least four Otters scored in double digits.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 27; REBOUNDS: Chol Deng 7; ASSISTS: Joey Bilello/Miki Gacic 3; BLOCKS: Michael Mora/Mezziah Oakman 1; STEALS: Jaden Tengan 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB concludes its brief 2-game homestand by hosting Cal State L.A. Saturday in The Kelp Bed. They'll tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
