Otters Bounce Back Big, Beat L.A. 96-82

Tengan’s 26 leads five Otters in double figures

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bounced back into the win column with authority Saturday afternoon, scoring a season-high 96 points while dispatching Cal State L.A., 96–82, in The Kelp Bed.

The win lifts CSUMB to 10–6 over and 5–5 in the CCAA, keeping them in the thick of the conference playoff race as the league schedule nears its midpoint. L.A. fell to 5–11 and 4–5 with the loss.

Junior Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) capped a monster weekend by taking the top spot in the CCAA scoring race after a 26-point effort Saturday. Joey Bilello (Little, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) and Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW/Greyson CC) each chipped in 15. Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) and Ashton Reese (Scottsdale, Ariz./UMBC) completed CSUMB's double-digit quintet with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Bilello and Mora just missed double-doubles by grabbing nine rebounds apiece.

The Golden Eagles claimed an early 6-point lead, but a but a Deng layup gave CSUMB the lead for good at 22–21 midway through the first half. The Otters gradually eased away from there, building their lead to 17 points at 54–37 by the break.

L.A. made a final run after intermission, cutting the deficit to six points 10 minutes into the second half. The Otters responded with a 15–2 run over the ensuing four minutes to put the game on ice.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Chol Deng knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:36 remaining to extend the Otter lead to 92–73.

TENGAN CLAIMS CCAA SCORING LEAD: Junior Jaden Tengan's 26-point day against Cal State L.A. lifted him past teammate Michael Mora for the CCAA scoring lead. Tengan will enter next week at 17.9 points per game. Mora averages 17.4 ppg.

THE ROARING '20s: Jaden Tengan's 26-point game against Cal State L.A. was his sixth 20-point game of the season, giving him one more than Michael Mora for the team lead in that category.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Saturday against Cal State L.A. This time, the honors went to: Jaden Tengan (26), Chol Deng (15), Joey Bilello (15), Michael Mora (14) and Ashton Reese (10). It marked the 22nd consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

QUINTUPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Saturday's game versus Cal State L.A. marked the ninth time in 16 games this season that at least four Otters scored in double digits, and the first time that five Otters reached that mark. It's the first time that has happened since six Otters did it in a win over Sonoma State on Jan. 25, 2025.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN: The Otters matched their season high with 15 3-pointers in Saturday's win over Cal State L.A. (Central Washington on Nov. 15). That mark is tied for No. 3 on the Otter single-game record list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 26; REBOUNDS: Joey Bilello/Michael Mora 9; ASSISTS: Michael Mora 5; BLOCKS: Mezziah Oakman 3; STEALS: Ariya Briscoe/Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB heads to the other Bay area for a pair of games next week, starting Thursday (Jan. 22) at San Francisco State. They'll tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
