CSUEB 16, CSUMB 7 -- BOX SCORE
GENEVA, Ohio -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team battled Cal State East Bay in the third place game on Sunday afternoon at SPIRE Institute in hopes of earning third place for the second time in three years. However, after being upset in Saturday's semifinal game, the No. 2 seed Pioneers had other plans leading to a 16-7 Otter loss.
CSUMB kept in close in the first quarter scoring with 11 seconds left to put the score at 3-2 CSUEB. The Pioneers followed with a 5-goal second quarter to put CSUMB in an 8-3 hole at halftime.Â
The Otters came out strong in the third quarter outscoring East Bay 3-1 with two goals from
Sarah Smith and one from senior
Adrianna Craft. The 9-6 deficit would be as close as CSUMB would come to a comeback as CSUEB scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, handing the Otters the loss.
In addition to Smith's two goals,
Marisa Lovos also scored twice. Craft,
Lucy Gates, and
Jessi Boyd-Mankin contributed a goal each in the final game of the season.
Lovos and Tucker were selected to first and second team All-Tournament, respectively.
The Otters finish the 2017 season 8-13 overall. Lovos ended the season as the team leader in goals and assists with 37 and 16, respectively. Defensively,
Dinah Aiad led the team with 41 steals and 27 field blocks.
Morgen Fain recorded 187 saves in the cage.
