Otters Hold Off Gannon, Advance To Semifinals

MB wins 15-13, will play #1 seed Concordia Saturday

IRVINE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay held off a late charge by Gannon University Friday morning to defeat the Golden Knights 15–13 and advance to the semifinals of the Western Water Polo Association Championship Tournament at the Woollett Aquatics Center.

CSUMB advances to meet top seed an host Concordia University Saturday afternoon. The winner of that match will play Sunday for the WWPA title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Freshman Olivia Gutierrez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) led the Otters as she has done all season with four goals, two assists and six points. It was her ninth hat trick and 25th multi-point game in 28 outings this season.

Senior Alex Harris (Davis Senior HS/Long Beach State) recorded her second hat trick of the season while Stella Martin (Clovis West HS), Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) and Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS) added two goals apiece.

Sophomore Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) backstopped the defense with nine saves.

CSUMB raced to leads of 3–0 and 5–1 and appeared to be cruising as the first quarter ended. The Otters still led 9–4 at the half before Gannon began to make its charge.

The Golden Knights went on a 7–2 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to forge an 11–11 tie. Gutierrez and Harris ended the run with a pair of scores to put the Otters back on top. Gutierrez and Martin added goals in the game's waning moments to secure the victory.

The Otters will face off against WWPA West Division winner Concordia in Saturday's first semifinal match. First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
