Otters Fall to UCSD, Beat SSU in Sudden Death

Veloso nets seven goals in sudden death win over SSU

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team played in two hard fought games on Saturday afternoon at Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, Calif. After a battle wth UC San Diego ended in a 6–21 loss, CSUMB and SSU took its game to a sudden death OT with the Otters breaking through with th 13–12 win.

GAME 1 | UC SAN DIEGO 21, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 6
The Otters ran into the buzz saw that is the No. 10 ranked UC San Diego Tritons in game one of the Sonoma State Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons scored early and often and never looked back en route to a 21–6 win. 

The bright spot for CSUMB was the ball movement. Six different Otters found the back of the net in the loss including three freshman in Katrina Conen (Granite Bay High School), Dinah Aiad (Redondo Union High School), and Morgan Tucker (San Diego, Calif. / Clairemont High School).

Morgen Fain (Visalia, Calif. / Mt. Whitney High School) got the start in goal recorded four saves.

GAME 2 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 13, SONOMA STATE 12 (OT)
In the second game of the day, the Otters and Seawolves played in one for the ages. Despite trailing 3-5 at halftime, CSUMB never gave up sticking with the Seawolves throughout. Trailing 6–9, the Otters finally gained their first lead in the fourth quarter by scoring five goals. SSU scored twice and led 11–10 with 40 second remaining before Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) netted her fifth goal of the game to knot the game at 11–11 and send it into overtime.

CSUMB outscored SSU in the first overtime period backed by two goals by Veloso to lead 13–12. Sonoma Stepped up their defense in the second OT period by scoring once and not allowing the Otters to score, tying the game at 13–13 to push the game to a sudden death overtime period.

After 1:58 of stalemate in the period, Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS) broke through to score the game winner and send CSUMB home with a win and split of the two–game afternoon.

Fain played the entirety of the game in goal and blocked a career–high 18 to help lead CSUMB to the hard fought win.

CSUMB will head to San Jose State on April 9 to battle Arizona State and the Spartans.
