SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team played their final of three consecutive home games against Fresno Pacific on Saturday evening in a close game between regional foes.
FPU broke open the scoring one minute and six seconds into the game, however
Cami Kellogg (Felton, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley HS) tied it up with her first of two goals in the first quarter. The Sunbirds scored twice more to take a 3–2 lead after the first quarter. CSUMB took their only lead of the game in the second quarter with two quick goals to take a 4–3 lead. Fresno Pacific came back with a run of their own, scoring three unanswered goals, regaining a two score lead.
Maegan Murphy (Temecula, Calif. / Great Oak High School) netted a goal with one minute remaining to put CSUMB within one at the half.
The Sunbirds mimiced their second quarter by scoring three unanswered goals en route to a 10–5 lead. The Otters answered by out scoring FPU 4–1 in the final 3:12 in the third to trail 11–9 after three quarters. The Otters outscored FPU 2–1 in the fourth quarter, the Sunbirds had the insurance they needed to hand CSUMB an 11–12 loss.
Maggie Albers (Monterey, Calif. / Monterey High School) collected three more goals, bringing her season total to 11. In addition to Kellogg's two goals,
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) also scored twice.
CSUMB falls to 0–7 on the season. Monterey Bay will play an exhibition against UC Santa Cruz before heading to Pennsylvania to battle WWPA newcomers Gannon University (Feb. 19) and Mercyhurst University (Feb. 21).
