THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team ended its weekend in Southern California with two more games at the Tina Finali Invitational. The Otters battle but came up short in both contests against Chapman University and Pomona–Pitzer.
CHAMPMAN 13, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 12 -- BOX SCOREChapman got off to a fast start in the morning game with three consecutive goals. CSUMB got on the board thanks to
Olivia Woolery (San Diego, Calif. / Clairemont High School) but trailed by three at 1–4 at the end of the first quarter. The Otters outscored the Champman 4–2 in the second quarter to cut their deficit to one goal at 5–6 at halftime.
CSUMB wasted no time, tying the game just 44 seconds into the game. The game stayed close throughout the second half with ties at seven, eight, nine, 11, and finally 12–12 with 1:20 remaining in the game. However, with six seconds left in the game, Chapman found the back of net, starting the Otters day with a crushing 12–13 loss.
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS) recorded a hat trick, while
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) scored twice in the loss. Seven other Otters scored once.
POMONA–PITZER 9, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 6 -- BOX SCOREIn their second game of the day and final game of the weekend, the Otters met up with Pomona–Pitzer. CSUMB was quickly down 0–4 after a scoreless first quarter and two Pomona goals early in he second. Veloso found the netfor the Otters first goal at the 4:40 mark of the second period to make it 1-4.
It looked like CSUMB was primed for a run after
Katrina Conen's (Granite Bay High School) goal, putting the Otters within two goals. However, Pomona out scored CSUMB 5–3 the next 12:40 and led 9–5 heading into the fourth quarter. Monterey Bay held Pomona–Pitzer scoreless in the final quarter, but CSUMB could only score once in the quarter, ending game down three at 6–9.
Veloso recorded a hat trick for CSUMB while
Dinah Aiad (Redondo Union High School) scored twice.
Kat Lloyd (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte HS) got the start in the cage and saved seven balls in the loss.
Monterey Bay will return home for a single game on Sunday, March 6 against UC Davis beginning at noon at The Otter Tank.
