WHITTIER, Calif. -- On Saturday afternoon, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team took a break from the Tina Finali Invitational to play two games at Whittier College. CSUMB was able to take care of Claremont–Mudd–Scripps in the first game 13–7, but could not complete the Saturday sweep, falling to Whittier 10–16.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 13, CLAREMONT–MUDD–SCRIPPS 7The Otters took a 3–1 edge after the first quarter and outscored CMS 4–1 in the second quarter backed by two goals from
Marisa Lovos (Tualatin High Schol) to grab a 72 lead at the half.
Up by five, the Otters never looked back, scoring four in the third quarter and three more in the fourth leading to the 13–7 win.
After two goals in the first half, Lovos collected two more scores in the second half to toal four in the game.
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) collected three goals while
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS) contributed two scores in the win.
WHITTIER 16, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 10It was a tight game right off the bat as the two teams traded goals leading to a 3–3 score at the end of the first quarter. That trend continued in the second quarter as Craft scored two of her three goals in the quarter. However, the Poets found the back of the net with 50 seconds remaining to take a 7–6 lead into halftime.
Whittier got off to a fast start in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals, never looking back. Over the final 16 minutes of play, the Otters were outscored 9–4, leading to a 10–16 final and loss.
In addition to Craft's hat trick, Veloso and
Katrina Conen (Granite Bay High School) scored twice while three other Otters scored once.
Monterey Bay will return to the Tina Finali Invite on Sunday to battle Chapman University and Pomona–Pitzer.
