CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 14, GANNON UNIVERSITY 7 -- BOX SCOREERIE, Penn. -- All the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team needed was a change of scenery in order to find the win column. The Otters traveled to the East Coast for a five game spread, beginning with Gannon University. CSUMB found the back of the net often en route to the 14–7 victory on Friday night.
Monterey Bay gathered a 3–2 lead after the first quarter and a score from
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and
Kylie Wheelock (Clovis HS). The Otter offense continued to shine in the second quarter, backed by two more scores from Veloso. CSUMB took a 7–2 lead into halftime thanks to a shutout quarter from
Morgen Fain (Visalia, Calif. / Mt. Whitney High School). CSUMB spread the scoring around in the third quarter as
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS), Amanda Kitchen (West Albany HS) and
Maggie Albers (Monterey High School) all scored once in the quarter.
Kat Lloyd (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte HS) started the second half in goal and kept the Knights out of the goal, allowing the Otters to take a commanding 10–2 lead. While the Knights managed to score five time in the final eight minutes, CSUMB answered that with four scores of their own, leading to the 14–7 victory.
In addition to Veloso's hat trick plus one,
Cami Kellogg (Felton, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley HS) netted three goals in the win. For Gannon, Alison Cooney contributed a hat trick.
Monterey Bay will play two on Saturday with games against Villanova University and WWPA newcomer Mercyhurst.
