BOX SCORE
SEASIDE, Calif. -- Despite an impressive game from senior
Maggie Albers (Monterey, Calif. / Monterey High School), her four goals were not enough to help the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team surpass Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon at the Otter Tank.
The game stayed close and the Otters were in it after the first quarter with a score of 3–2. In the second quarter, the Broncos started to pull away by scoring the first two goals of the quarter. But at the 5:03 mark, Albers scored her second goal of the game, followed by a goal from
Kylie Wheelock (Clovis HS) to keep the Otters within one goal at 5–4. At the 3:31 mark of the second quarter, SCU began to pull away once again, scoring three unanswered goals to take a an 8–4 lead into half time.
The Broncos picked up where they left off, scoring the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 10–4 lead. This time for CSUMB it was
Amanda Kitchen (Albany, Ore. / West Albany HS) who stopped the bleeding with a power–play goal at the 5:17 mark of quarter number three. Three more Otter goals took place in the third quarter but, SCU answered with two of their own to stake a 12-–8 lead.
CSUMB was able to grab one more goal – Albers' fourth – in the fourth quarter, but SCU tripled that output, handing CSUMB a 16–9 loss.
In addition to Alber's four goals, Wheelock pitched in two of her own.
Kat Lloyd (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte HS) got the start in the cage and tallied three saves.
Morgen Fain (Tualatin High School) also saw time in goal and recorded six saves in the loss.
Monterey Bay has yet to find the win column in the young season. The next shot will be on Saturday, Feb. 6 against Fresno Pacific. First sprint is set for 4:00 p.m.
