SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team opened up WWPA play in it's home opener on Saturday afternoon against Sonoma State. After a close first half, the Seawolves pulled away on their way to handing the hosts a 13-7 loss.
The Otters got on the board first in the opening minutes on
Cami Kellogg's (Felton, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS) fourth goal of the season. Sonoma State then made it clear that this was going to be a close game throughout as both teams traded goals for the first eight minutes, leading to a 3-3 tie after the first quarter.
The second quarter opened with a
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) goal to give the Otters a 4–3 lead. However, Sonoma State followed that up with five unanswered goals inclulding two from Noelle Herrera. Veloso ended the Otter scoring drought with her second goal of the quarter at the 2:13 mark. The final goal of the half came from CSUMB's
Kylie Wheelock (Clovis HS) but the Otters found themselves down by two at intermission.
Goals were at a primium in the third quarter as both defenses stepped it up coming out of the break. CSUMB got within a goal at 7–8, but two Sonoma State goal in the final 1:47 put the Otters back into a three–goal hole heading into the fourth quarter. The Seawolves tacked on three more goals in the final eight minutes, two of which came from Herrera who finished with four goals. The Otters were unable to find the back of the cage in the fourth en route to a 7–13 loss.
In addition to Veloso's two goals,
Maggie Albers (Monterey, Calif./Monterey HS) also contributed two goals in the loss.
Morgen Fain (Visalia, Calif./Mt. Whitney HS) got the start in goal and despite allowing 13 goals, the sophomore transfer collected 12 saves. Taylor Plorin recorded 8 saves for the Seawolves.
CSUMB falls to 0-5, 0-1 WWPA. Monterey Bay will continue its time at home and play Santa Clara on Saturday, Jan. 30. First sprint is set for noon.
