Polo Takes Rubber Match From Biola

CSUMB wins 12-7 entering Friday finale at CUI

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay earned a huge road victory by taking a 12–7 decision from Biola University Wednesday afternoon at the SPLASH! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. It was CSUMB's second win in three tries against the Eagles this season.

The win give's CSUMB (12–14, 5–2 WWPA) a chance to finish anywhere from first to third in the WWPA's West Division standings. Biola (9–16, 6–1) plays Concordia Thursday in a match that will have a big bearing on the final seeding entering next week's WWPA Championship Tournament. Most importantly for Otter fans, a win Friday at Concordia will seal no worse than the No. 2 seed, regardless of the outcome of other games.

Wednesday afternoon, four different players scored as the Otters raced to a 4–0 in the game's first six minutes. Biola scrapped its way back to within 6–4 by halftime. From there, it appeared as if this one would go down to the wire after the teams traded four goals over the first four minutes of the third quarter.

That's when the Otter defense clamped down, holding the Eagles scoreless over the next over the next 10:01. Goalkeeper Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) backstopped the effort with a 14-save afternoon. It marked the 11th time this season the sophomore netminder recorded double-digit saves.

Sophomore Abby Allan (Sanger HS) and freshman Catt Jenkins (Corona/Centennial HS) scored power play goals to start another 4–0 Otter surge late in the third to gave CSUMB a 12–6 lead that put the game out of reach.

Freshman Olivia Gutierrez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) scored four goals to register her seventh hat trick and lead the Otter attack. Sophomore Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) added a pair of goals while Harris chipped in four points with a goal and three assists.

CSUMB closes the regular season Friday at Concordia University. The Otter will head back to Irvine the following week for the WWPA Championship Tournament, Apr. 10-12, at the Woolett Aquatics Center.
