Otters Finish Strong vs SJSU But Lose Twice

Kitchen, Veloso tally three goals on weekend

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The second day of the LouStrong Memorial Tournament pitted the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team agains Stanford University and the host team, San Jose State.

GAME 1: STANFORD 19, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 1 -- BOX SCORE
The Otters were simply out matched in this one in playing one of the top Division I teams in the nation. The Cardinal got off to a fast start scoring six times in the first quarter and never looked back from there. Stanford went on to score six more times in the second quarter, twice in the third and four times in the fourth quarter, totalling 19 goals in all. CSUMB found its score in the second quarter from the hand of Katrina Conen (Granite Bay High School) for the second time this weekend.

GAME 2: SAN JOSE STATE 15, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 9 -- BOX SCORE
In the final contest of the four game weekend, the Otters were able to net a tournament high nine goals against the host Spartans. CSUMB scored first in this game for the first time this weekend just 30 seconds in the game. Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) scored her third goal of the weekend by successfully scoring the penalty goal to take a 1–0 lead. 
Amanda Kitchen (Albany, Ore./West Albany HS) put CSUMB up 2–0 at 6:09 mark of the first quarter. Monterey Bay scored twice more in the quarter, but gave up four goals to the Spartans in the final five minutes to be tied at 4–4 at the end of the first quarter. Senior Jen Goforth (Visalia, Calif./Golden West HS) ?netted her first career goal as part of a two goal second quarter. All was even going into the half as well as both teams scored twice to bring the score to 6–6. 

San Jose State did not allow a goal to CSUMB in the third quarter and capitalized on the defensive stand by taking a commanding 11–6 lead. CSUMB found a way into the back of the net three times in the final period, but it was too little to catch SJSU who scored twice more to hand the Otters a 15–9 loss.

CSUMB stuck with Morgen Fain (Visalia, Calif./Mt. Whitney High School) in the cage throughout allowing her to save 10 balls.

Monterey Bay finishes the weekend without a win (0–4) and will play its home opener against Sonoma State next Saturday (Jan. 23) to begin the WWPA season.
