Women's Water Polo | January 16, 2016
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team kicked off its 2016 season at the LouStrong Memorial Tournament hosted by San Jose State on Saturday morning against top tier competition.
GAME 1: UC DAVIS 24, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 3 -- BOX SCOREThe Otters began their season with a stout matchup against UC Davis. CSUMB was able to score three times against the Aggies.
Amanda Kitchen (Albany, Ore./West Albany HS) who is returning for her junior season netted her first goal of the season. Newcomers
Katrina Conen (Granite Bay HS) and
Marisa Lovos (Tualatin HS) earned thier first collegiate goals for the Otters. However, it was all Aggies from the get-go as after eight first quarter goals, UCD never looked back en route to handing CSUMB a 24–3 loss.
Kat Lloyd (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) got the start in the cage, but coach Figueroa was able to give time to
Macy Buhl (Lemoore HS) and
Morgen Fain (Visalia, Calif./Mt. Whitney HS) as well
. Lloyd led the Otter goalkeepers with seven saves.
GAME 2: CALIFORNIA 22, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 5 -- BOX SCOREIn the second game of the day for CSUMB, the Otters faced off against Cal Berkeley. CSUMB was able to net five goals in this game including Conen's second goal of the day.
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) led the Otters in this one with two goals coming in the third quarter.
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich./Rockford Senior HS) earned her first goal of the season while freshman
Maegan Murphy (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak High School) netted her first goal of her collegiate career. Lloyd earned the start in this game as well and recorded five saves in the first two quarters combine. Buhl and Fain also got time in the cage with Fain earning a save in the third quarter.
Monterey Bay begins the season 0–2 and will battle Stanford and San Jose State tomorrow as part of day two of the LouStrong Memorial Tournament.
