FINAL RESULTS
VALLEJO, Calif. -- Ray Richards (Tualatin HS) ended the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional Tournament with a 70 foot putt on the 18th hole to give him a share of the individual title. The Cal State Monterey Bay Men's Golf team also secured the team championship with a three–round score of 887 (+23), winning the regional title by 19 shots over Sonoma State. With the win, the Otters advance to the Div. II National Championship.
Richards teed off on the 54th and final hole two shots back of the lead. After finding the green in two shots, the junior from Oregon lined up the putt with a chance for an eagle on the par five 18th.
"Not surprisingly, I didn't tell him his situation (in the standings)," said head coach
Jason Owen.
Richards used the high line, allowing the ball to drop off the hill on the back of green and roll into the bottom of the cup. The eagle gave Richards a 71 in the third round and a total score of 217 (+1).
Brandon Hortt (San Diego, Calif. / West Hills HS) also finished in the top five (T4), with a final score of 219 (+3).
Carr Vernon (Poplar Bluff HS) finished in a tie for 14th place after a third round score of 75, giving him a 54–hole score of 225.
Anton Rosen (Stockholm, Sweden) and
Fredrik Jullum (Lørenskog, Norway) rounded out the Otter five, finishing in a tie for 35th and a tie for 47th, respectively.
Monterey Bay will head to Hickory, N.C. for the 2015 NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship on May 19–23.
