FINAL BOX SCORE
GENEVA, OH.-- It was not for a lack of trying that the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Water Polo team fell to Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon at the WWPA Championship Tournament at the SPIRE Institute. The Otters surmounted a five–goal comeback to tie the game at 10–10, sending the game into two overtime periods. However, the Pioneers were able to score one in the second OT to give the Otters a 12–11 loss in the quarterfinal match.
The Otters were outscored 7–1 after the first two quarters, but were able to turn it around after the break. Each team traded goals to start the third quarter, including goals from
Cami Kellogg (Felton, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley HS) and
Ashton Palmer (Salt Lake City, Utah / Cottonwood HS). CSUMB ended the period with back–to–back goals by
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and
Bree Hogervorst (Ramona, Calif. / Mountain Valley Academy), to outscore the Pioneers 4–2 in the quarter. Trailing by four goals to start the final quarter, CSUMB got big goals by
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS) and Kellogg who each scored their second goals of the game. Veloso also netted her second goal of the half on a 5M penalty shot that found the back of the cage. Perhaps the biggest goal of the game was
Samantha Whitecotton's (Roseville, Calif. / Woodcreek HS), who completed the come back with her game–tying goal with 51 seconds remaining in the game.
"We showed a lot of determination come back like we did," says head coach
Gary Figueroa (@Coach_Fig). "I am proud of out teams effort."
In the first overtime period, CSUEB scored first but was answered by Veloso on her third goal of the game
, knotting the score at 11 goals apiece. However, CSUMB was held quiet in the second extra period as the Pioneers were able to sneak one passed
Amanda Jennings (Oakley, Calif. / Freedom HS), and hand the Otters the heartbreaking 12-11 loss.
In addition to Veloso's hat trick, Kellogg and Craft each contributed two goals in the loss. Jennings made 16 saves in the cage for the Otters. Monterey Bay will await the loser of the Sonoma State vs. Gannon contest on Saturday at 8 a.m.
Go Otters!
