SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Water Polo team came out on a mission, scoring early in the game to take a two point lead. CSUMB never looked back, leading by as many as four goals twice, securing an 8-5 win over Cal State East Bay on Saturday afternoon at the Otter Tank.
The first goal came 22 seconds into the game from the hand of
Cami Kellogg (Felton, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley HS ) to give the Otters a 1–0 lead early on. Goals by
Samantha Whitecotton (Roseville, Calif. / Woodcreek HS) and
Kara Orr (Los Banos HS) towards the end of the period put CSUMB up 3–1 after the first eight minutes of play. The Otters extended their lead to three goals after outscoring the Pioneers 2–1 in the second quarter, taking a 5–2 lead into halftime.
The Otters and Pioneers traded goals for the remainder of the game as each team scored three times in the second half. Kellogg scored her second goal of the contest after a 5M penalty was enforced with a penalty shot.
While the Pioneers had eight chances at power play goals, they were only able to convert on one. Ka'iliponi McGee led CSUEB in offense, netting two goals in the loss.
Amanda Jennings (Oakley, Calif. / Freedom HS) made 16 saves, moving her season total to 240 saves, 57 short of her career high of 297 with three games left in the regular season.
After the win, the Otters move to 6–13 on the season. Monterey Bay will play its final home games next Saturday, April 4, when they take on Sonoma State and UC San Diego. First sprint is set for 10 a.m. against SSU.
