FRESNO, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay travel to Fresno on Saturday to play games against Cal State Bakersfield and Fresno Pacific, who the Otters beat 10–6 just last weekend in the Otter Tank. The day started with a tough 12–6 loss to the Roadrunners. The Sunbirds would get the best of the Otters, but needed 31:59 to do so, winning on a buzzer–beater, 4–3.
CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 12, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 6 -- BOX SCOREThe Roadrunners got off to a fast start, netting three goals in the final 2:32 of the first quarters, staking an early 3–0 lead. The Otter opened the second quarter with their first goal of the game by
Jessica Laurence (Danville/Monte Vista HS), her first of the season. CSUMB then cut it to within one goal when
Cami Kellogg (Felton/San Lorenzo HS) fired one in just 1:13 later, narrowing the deficit to one goal.,
However, that would be as close as the Otters would get against Bakersfield as the Roadrunners outscored CSUMB 12–4 over the remaining 22:06 to hand the Otters a 12-6 loss.
In addition to Laurence and Kellogg, four other Otters contributed one goal each. CSUMB goalkeeper
Amanda Jennings (Oakley/Freedom HS) recorded 13 saves in the loss. Offensively for the Roadrunners, Niki De Leon led the way with a hat trick in the win. Kristen Jensen, Lauren Paulson, and Janelle Shelby scored twice. Goalkeeper Brittany Tyra made six saves for Bakersfield.
FRESNO PACIFIC 4, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 3 -- BOX SCOREThis being the second time these teams played in as many weeks, the Sunbirds and the Otters were familiar with each other's style of play. That showed on the scoreboard as the neither team surpassed five goals.
Fresno Pacific was able to net three goals in the opening period, all of which came with under five minutes left in the quarter. The Otters were unable to get on the board until the second half, but were also able to keep FPU from scoring, thanks to six saves from Jennings over the second and third quarter.
CSUMB broke through the Fresno Pacific defense on a goal by
Ashton Palmer (Salt Lake City, Ut. / Cottonwood HS) to put the Otters within two goals of a tie. A tie they would get later in the game on goals by
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS) to end the third quarter and
Bree Hogervorst (Ramona/Mountain Valley Academy) to begin the fourth quarter.
After the Hogervorst goal, all scoring was silenced until the final second of the game when the Sunbirds Emily Marr found a lose ball in front of the net and fired it in for the winning goal.
"(Marr) cleaned up the garbage in front of our net. Great effort on her part," said head coach
Gary Figueroa (@Coach_Fig).
The Otters fall to 2–7 on the season. Cal State Monterey Bay will play Cal Lutheran next Saturday, February 14, in the Otter Tank in Seaside, Calif.
GO OTTERS!
