SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Day two of the San Jose State Invitational put the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Water Polo team against University of the Pacific and UC Davis. While the Otters found offensive out put, it would not be enough as CSUMB faced two losses at the hands of the Tigers and the Aggies.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 4, UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC 13 -- BOX SCOREThe Otters briefly led in this game as
Ashton Palmer (Salt Lake City, Utah / Cottonwood HS) got CSUMB on the board one 1:30 into the first quarter, scoring one of her two goals in the game. However, the Tigers would go on to score two goals of their on to hold a 2–1 lead at the end of the first eight minutes. In the second quarter, Palmer found the back of the cage again, netting her second goal of the game and the Otters hope of a second half comeback trailing 7–2.
Cal State Monterey Bay was shut out in the third, allowing UOP to increase its lead to seven goals at a score of 10–2. The final eight minutes saw goals from
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil / Colegio Sao Vicente de Paulo) and
Adriana Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS), but it would not be enough the make a comeback as the Otters took their third loss of the season by a score of 13–4.
Amanda Jennings (Oakley, Calif. / Freedom HS) made her third consecutive start and recorded a season and tournament–high 12 saves for the Otters while UOP's Michelle Relton and Alexis Hollinrake combine for 12 saves with eight and four, respectively. The Tiger offense was led by Rachel Krieger who tallied a hat trick in the win.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 4, UC DAVIS 10 -- BOX SCOREIn its final game of the San Jose State Invitational the Otter faught hard to get its first win of the season, but the UC Davis offense proved to be to much as the Aggies went on to win, 10–4. CSUMB got on the board in the second quarter when Craft was able to get it passed the Aggie goalkeeper on the Otter 6–on–5 advantage.
Samantha Whitecotton (Roseville, Calif. / Woodcreek HS) proved to be the offensive star, scoring twice to lead CSUMB in that catagory.
Cami Kellogg (Felton, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley HS) scored the fourth goal putting the Otter within striking distance, trailing 6–4. However, UC Davis scored four unanswered goals to take the 10–4 lead and win the match.
Jennings didn't waste anytime breaking her season–high, recorded 15 saves againstthe Aggies; Jillian Wilding had nine for UCD. Three Aggies scored twice in the 10–4 win.
The Otters fall to 0–4 on the season. Cal State Monterey Bay will travel to Cal State East Bay next Saturday, January 24, to battle the Pioneers. First sprint is set for noon.
