SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Water Polo team began it's 2015 season on the road, as they traveled to San Jose State to participate in the LouStrong Memorial San Jose State Invitational. Day 1 of the tournament matched the Otters up with some of the top teams in the nation in San Jose State and Stanford University. Both matches would prove to be a struggle for CSUMB as it went on to fall in both matches.
"We learned some good things about ourselves playing No. 1 Stanford and No. 7 San Jose State," said head coach Gary Figuroa (@Coach_Fig). "Things we can build on. Things I'm already proud to be a part of. We are looking forward to UOP and UCD tomorrow."

Ashton Palmer (Salt Lake City, Utah / Cottonwood HS), who later assisted on one of Monterey Bay's three goals. The Otters got on the board for the first time in the second quarter when
Bree Hogervorst (Ramona, Calif. / Mountain Valley Academy) found the back of the net, bringing the score to 1–5 at the 5:35 remaining in the half. CSUMB closed out the half with it's second goal of the day, this time
Nicole Koorndyk (Claremont, Calif.) fired one in passed the outstretched hand of the SJSU goalkeeper.
Cal State Monterey Bay's
Cami Kellogg (Felton, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley HS) scored the third goal for the Otters early in the thrid quarter at the 6:32 mark, however, the Spartans pulled ahead to a lead of 8–3 at that point. San Jose State would go on to shut out the Otters offensively and score seven unanswered goals, handing CSUMB its first loss of the season by a score of 15–3.
Rae Lekness, Cara Robinson, and Clara Espar Llaquet led the Spartans offensively with two goals each in the win. While three different Otters recorded goals, Palmer and Hogervorst tied for the shot lead with three each.
Amanda Jennings (Oakley, Calif. / Freedom HS) got the start in goal for CSUMB and made seven saves, while
Morgan Watson (Moorpark, Calif.) took over in the fourth quarter and tallied one saves. Katelynn Thompson and Jessica Harris recorded two saves each inbetween the pipes for San Jose State.
San Jose State improves its record to 3–0.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 0, STANFORD UNIVERSITY 20 -- BOX SCOREThe seas did not calm for the Otters when they entered the pool with the Stanford Cardinal in the afternoon bout as it was a one sided game throughout. Cal State Monterey Bay was simply outmatched by Stanford offensively and defensively, scoring 20 goals in the match. Stanford goalkeeper Emily Dorst made eight saves in the match, keeping CSUMB out of the net for the entire 32 minutes. Dani Jackovich led Stanford with three goals.
The Otters were able to take 18 shots, including four each from Kellogg and
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS). Defensively for CSUMB, Jennings made seven saves while Watson, who came in the game at the start of the fourth quarter, made two.
The Otters now hold a record of 0–2 while Stanford moves to 2–0. Cal State Monterey Bay will be back in action Sunday for day two of the San Jose State Invitational to face University of the Pacific (11:20 a.m.) and UC Davis (2 p.m.).
