BOX SCORE

TURLOCK, Calif. — Playing on the road with its All–America candidate at considerably less than full strength proved too much of a burden for the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team to bear Friday night as the Otters dropped a tight 4–set decision at Cal State Stanislaus, 26–24, 21–25, 25–23, 25–14 in Fitzpatrick Arena.

CSUMB (12–8, 6–6 CCAA) did get an 18–kill, 14–dig double–double from sophomore Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) and a season–high 12 kills from freshman DJ Gresham-Ryder (Stockton/Chavez HS), but it lost deuce games in the first and third sets. With junior outside hitter Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) at much less than 100 percent, the Otters simply didn't have the firepower to rebound from those setbacks.

CSUMB also got 36 assists from junior Kelsey Johnston (Ripon HS), who now trails Dana Grimm (2,082) by just five for the No. 2 spot on the CSUMB career assist list. She also is closing in on Nicki Sanderson's Otter record of 2,143, a mark she should reach next weekend.

The Otters continue their 4–match roadtrip Saturday night, heading north on Highway 99 to tackle Chico State at 7 p.m.
