Otter Upset Bid Falls Just Short

No. 10 San Bernardino holds on to win in five

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay nearly pulled off a shocker before No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino rallied late for a 16–25, 25–15, 25–16, 23–25, 15–9 win Friday night in Coussoulis Arena.

Senior outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) had a huge game for CSUMB, putting down a match-high 15 kills and putting up a match-high 12 digs to go along with five aces. It wasn't quite enough in this one, however, as San Bernardino overcame a 6–3 deficit in the fifth set to pull out the win.

A Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) kill broke a 12–12 tie in the opening frame and the Otters never looked back to take a quick 1–0 lead in the match. A 5–0 start to set two allowed the Coyotes to cruise to that win and even the match at 1–1.

When San Bernardino used a 7–0 run midway through the third to take control again, it seemed that the Coyotes were coasting to the finish line. But the pesky Otters would not go away, playing through five ties in the final 10 points of set four before they pulled at the 25–23 win to force the winner-take-all fifth.

The scent of an upset was in the air when CSUMB jumped to a 6–3 lead to start the fifth. But another 7–0 San Bernardino run gave the Coyotes control.

A Maya Giannini (Palma HS) kill got the Otters back to within 10–8, but its as close as they would come.

FRIDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… With the Otters looking to extend their lead to 7–3 in the fifth, CCAA blocks leader Allison Legates teamed with Sarai Ross for a big stuff that kick-started San Bernardino's decisive 7–0 run.

DOUBLE THE FUN FOR PETERSON… Senior outside hitter Malia Peterson's match highs of 15 kills and 12 digs Friday in San Bernardino added up to her second double-double of the season. Her first came with 14 kills and 16 digs against Dominican University on Aug. 29.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO… By holding San Bernardino to 16 points, CSUMB limited the Coyotes to their lowest set score of the season and their fewest in a set in more than a year (15 vs. Cal State L.A. on Sept. 26, 2025).

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO, PART II… The 16 points allowed by the Otters in Friday's opening set were the fewest they've ever allowed the Coyotes in 40 all-time meetings. The previous low was 18 on Sept. 10, 2022.

PETERSON JOINS 600-POINT CLUB… With 21.5 points Friday at Cal State San Bernardino, Malia Peterson became the 19th player in Otter history to reach 600 career points. She'll enter play Saturday in San Marcos with 614.5 points. She needs seven points to pass Chandler McKean (2015-18) for No. 18 and 9.5 points to pass Kendra Miller (2004-07) for No. 17.

THE WAR AT THE NET RAGES ON: Lilly Bandle and Malia Thorne continue to race each other up the Otter career blocking charts. Friday in San Bernardino, Bandle earned a 5–3 edge. Bandle upped her lead in the block assist race to 117–113. On the total blocks list, Bandle also increased her lead, 148–144.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 21.5; KILLS: Malia Peterson 15; BLOCKS: Lilly Bandle 5; ACES: Malia Peterson 5; DIGS: Malia Peterson 12.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their SoCal roadtrip with a matinée at Cal State San Marcos Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
