Big Hitting Night Leads Otters To Sweep

Otters hit .311 to take down UC Merced

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay hit better than .300 for the second time this season and rode that effort to a 29–27, 25–15, 26–24 sweep of UC Merced Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

Senior outside Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) led the way for the second consecutive match, this time finishing with a match-high 15 kills against just two errors for a season-high .351 attack percentage. Middle blockers Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) also played major roles in the attack, with the former putting down 11 kills and the latter hitting .615.

Thorne's match-high attack percentage led CSUMB to a .311 percentage for the match, marking the second time the Otters have hit .300 this season and the first since they hit .337 in a sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 19.

Each of Saturday's three sets gave fans a different flavor. The first set was a nail-biter, with the Otters needing kills by Thorne and Peterson to save a pair of match points down 24–22. Tied at 27–27, sophomore Maya Giannini (Palma HS) finally gave CSUMB the set with a pair of kills.

CSUMB pulled away early in the second set, hitting .381 to win going away. When the Otters jumped out to a 15–4 lead in the third, the match appeared to be all but over.

UCM found a final burst of energy, however, and used a 19–7 blitz to earn at pair of set points at 24–22. That was as close as Merced would get, as a Thorne kill and a Sofia MacPherson (Sacramento/Pleasant Grove HS) did half the work and a pair of Bobcat miscues did the rest, allowing the Otters to complete their third sweep of the season.

SATURDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… After Merced rallied from 15–4 down in the third to take a 24–22 lead, an emphatic Malia Thorne kill ended the Bobcat rally. A pair of Merced errors sandwiched a Sofia MacPherson ace to give the Otters the sweep.

PETERSON FINISHES HUGE WEEKEND WITH A FLOURISH… Senior outside hitter Malia Peterson's followed Friday's 16-kill performance against fourth-ranked Fresno Pacific with a match-high 15 in Saturday's sweep of UC Merced. Her 31 kills were the most in consecutive matches of her career.

OTTERS ENJOY A "KILL"-ER NIGHT… CSUMB's 46 kills in its Saturday sweep of UC Merced rank as the 15th most in a 3-set match in program history. They are the most kills by the Otters in a sweep since they put down 47 in a win over UC San Diego on Sept. 29, 2018.

PETERSON NEARS 600-POINT CLUB… With 15.5 points Saturday versus UC Merced, Malia Peterson passed Hilary Heath (2002-03) for the No. 19 spot on the career points list with 593.0. She need seven more to become the 19th player in Otter history to reach 600 career points.

THE WAR AT THE NET RAGES ON: Lilly Bandle and Malia Thorne continue to race each other up the Otter career blocking charts. Saturday against UC Merced, Bandle earned a 4–3 edge. Both had one solo block to remain tied for 16th place with 31 each . Bandle's 3–2 edge in assists upped her lead in that race to 112–110. On the total blocks list, Bandle also increased her lead by one, 143–141.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 15.5; KILLS: Malia Peterson 15; BLOCKS: Lilly Bandle 4; ACES: Gia Hoffman/Malia Thorne 2; DIGS: Macey Camacho/Maya Giannini 10.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head back to Southern California for a pair of matches next weekend, starting with a visit to Coussoulis Arena and nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Friday (Oct. 9). First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
