Peterson’s Big Night Not Enough To Slow No. 4 FPU

Otter senior puts down match-high 16 kills

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — A big night from Cal State Monterey Bay's Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) wasn't enough to derail the volleyball freight train that is No. 4 ranked Fresno Pacific as the Sunbirds took a 25–16, 25–16, 25–12 decision Friday in The Kelp Bed.

Peterson finished with a match-high 16 kills—her most ever in a 3-set match—to keep the Otters competitive early. But FPU made just four attack errors in 88 swings and sided out at a ridiculous 78.2 percent to keep CSUMB from gaining traction.

The Otters had the better of things early in the match and led as late as 10–8 in the first set. But a 10–2 Sunbird run put the breaks on that run, allowing FPU to ease away.

Sets two and three saw a similar pattern, with FPU using micro runs to gently ease away for the final two wins to claim the match.

In addition to Peterson, middles Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) combined to hit .391 with 11 kills. Junior libero Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) finished with a match-high 10 digs.

FRIDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… With the Otters leading 10–8 early, Fresno's Amanda Lauer put down two kills before combining with Itzel Aguayo for a block in a 4–0 run that gave the Sunbirds their first lead, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

SWEET 16… Senior outside hitter Malia Peterson's 16 kills not only were a personal high for a 3-set match, they were the 15th most ever in a 3-set match by an Otter since the NCAA went to 25-point scoring in 2008. They were the most by an Otter since Jenna Tobin put down 17 in a sweep of Holy Names University in 2021.

PETERSON JOINS THE 500 CLUB… With 16 kills Friday against Fresno Pacific, Malia Peterson brought her career total to 501, becoming the 17th player in program history to reach 500 career kills. She needs 65 more kills to catch Kerri Sudarsana (2006-09) for 15th place on the career kills list.

PETERSON REACHES TOP 20 IN POINTS… With 17.0 points Friday versus Fresno Pacific, Malia Peterson passed Mollin Helfrich (2019-22) for the No. 20 spot in career points at 577.5 points. She needs 8.5 more to pass Hilary Heath (2002-03) and 22.5 to become the 19th player in Otter history to reach 600 career points.

THE WAR AT THE NET RAGES ON: Malia Thorne and Lilly Bandle continue to race each other up the Otter career blocking charts. Friday against Fresno Pacific it was Thorne's turn to shine. She had one solo block to tie Bandle for 16th place with 30 each . With one block assist, Thorne moved one behind Bandle into 22nd place (109–108). On the total blocks list, she also moved to within one off Bandle, 139–138.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 17.0; KILLS: Malia Peterson 16; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 2; ACES: Malia Peterson 1; DIGS: Macey Camacho 10.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief homestand by hosting UC Merced Saturday in The Kelp Bed. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
