SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team hosts it's second and final Mini Tournament of the season, featuring Concordia University Irvine and conference foe Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Mar. 31.
COACH'S CORNER WITH GARY FIGUEROA: "Last weeks competition provided a great lead into another exciting weekend for the Otters. Our 'Lake Elsinore' connection really stepped up with an amazing offensive production from
Julie Cooper (we knew she could do it) and our team POW (Player Of the Week)
Alex Tyrrell. We will continue to work on our press defense this week to shut down our opponents at the Otter Tank this Saturday."
ON THE HORIZON: The Otters team will be honoring their three seniors (
Sarah Chafi,
Nikki Smart,
Katie Sowul) in their final home game the evening of Friday, April 13 when they host WWPA opponent Colorado State at the Otter Tank at 6 p.m.
HAGLETS DAY: The women's water polo team is hosting its annual Alumni Game on Sunday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at the Otter Tank on CSUMB's campus. The 2012 Otters will scrimmage the alumni (or as Coach Fig likes to say; Haglets). This event serves as a great opportunity for the CSUMB water polo community to come together, catch up with old friends, and meet new ones.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: CSUMB earned a season split with Sonoma State after earning a 16-9 victory at the Otter Tank. The Otters then traveled to Cal State Bakersfield to participate in the Roadrunner Invitational where they finished with an afternoon split, featuring a 12-7 win over La Verne followed by a tough 13-6 loss to No. 16 Hartwick.
ESPN 630 AM STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Junior
Alex Tyrrell earns CSUMB Student-Athlete of the Week honors for her performance this past weekend. Tyrrell was one of the reasons for the Otters offensive surge in the game against Sonoma State where she racked up four goals, one assist, and one field block. As the team traveled to Cal State Bakersfield, Tyrrell added to her stat line another goal, one assist, and two ejections drawn.
WWPA STANDINGS BREAKDOWN: CSUMB remains in the top half of the WWPA this deep into the season. The Otters (13-11, 3-5 WWPA) are one of only five teams playing at or above 500. Sitting amoung the likes of No. 7 Loyola Marymount, No. 18 UC San Diego, Cal State Bakersfield, and Cal State East Bay.
