SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Water Polo team earned a season split with the Seawolves of Sonoma State after their 16-9 win at the Otter Tank.
The Otters showed a balanced offense, with Senior
Nikki Smart (Clovis/Buchanan HS),
Julie Cooper (Wildomar/Elsinore HS), and classmate
Alex Tyrrell (Wildomar/Elsinore HS) posted four points apiece.
Katie Sowul (Anaheim/Esperanza HS) added another two for the Otters.
The Otters offense came out aggressive outscoring the Seawolves in three-of-four quarters.
Relentless pressure by CSUMB is what drew five ejections on Sonoma in the first two quarters push the Otters lead
to 10-4 at half.
Junior
Jackie Walters' (San Diego/La Jolla HS) lone goal came from a fast break with just two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The goal pushed the Otters lead to 14-6 as they enter the final eight minutes of the game.
The Otters starting line extended the lead with two quick goals by Smart in under two minutes of play. With multiple opportunities, Sonoma held off the Otters offense not allowing any more goals for the remainder of the game, outscoring CSUMB 3-2.
Otter Water Polo continues play at the Roadrunner Invitational Sunday, March 25 with two games in the Hillman Aquatic Center on the campus of Cal State Bakersfield. CSUMB faces La Verne and Hartwick, two non-conference opponents.
