BERKELEY, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team battled through a pair of games at the Cal Speedo Invitational Saturday afternoon coming out with a win against Pomona-Pitzer followed by a night game loss to top-ranked No. 2 Cal.
GAME 1
Earlier on Saturday, the Otters had another close match with a 7-5 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. Both teams remained scoreless after the first quarter. CSUMB came out after a team huddle outscoring the Sagehens 3-1 to lead into half, which would ultimately give them the win. Top scorer for CSUMB was senior
Katie Sowul with three goals. Senior classmate
Nikki Smart would add one, along with teammates
Julie Cooper,
Alex Tyrrell and
Jackie Walters.
Otter goalies saw equal playing time.
Paige Robinson finished the first half in goal with four saves and freshman
Amanda Jennings added another eight.

GAME 2
The pace set by the Bears was too much for the Otters to keep up. Cal finished the game with eleven individuals scoring one or more goals. Three Otters saw the back of the net with CSUMB's first quarter goal coming from Smart. The Otters front court offense came close with many attempts being taken. Cal freshman goalie Savanna Smith finished with 10 saves.
