Brandon Ward led the Otters with 19 points and six assists against Holy Names University.
BOX SCORE | COACH BISHOP'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team gave glimpses of its potential in Saturday afternoon's home exhibition opener against Holy Names University. But the shorthanded Otters also showed they are a work in progress while dropping an 84–76 overtime decision in the Kelp Bed.
The Otters got 19 points and six assists from junior guard
Brandon Ward (Riverside/Woodcrest HS) and 13 points and a game–high eight rebounds from junior forward
Derrick Anderson (Pittsburg HS). Junior guard
Geoff McIntosh (Gig Harbor, Wash./Northern Oklahoma CC) chipped in 15 points and five boards.
“We didn't start the game well and we missed a lot of open shots,” said CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Bishop. We put ourselves in a hole and we haven't been in that position before. But I thought we came out and responded in the second half. Their senior just hit a couple of big shots that made the difference.”
That senior was forward David Scott, who finished with a game–high 34 points. His two biggest shots came on consecutive possessions in overtime. Toss in a free throw and Scott went on a personal 6–0 run that turned a 75–74 Hawk lead into an 80–74 lead with less than a minute to play.
The Otters trailed by 10 at the half, 45–35, and by as many as 13 in the second half. But the team kept its composure and whittled away at the deficit until a pair of
Courtland Wharton (San Bernardino/Aquinas HS) free throws capped a 7–0 run and gave CSUMB a 72–70 lead with 1:29 remaining.
Holy Names tied the game with a pair of Mike McElory free throws. The Otters had two chances to win it in regulation but missed a pair of three–point attempts.
Ward hit two free throws early in overtime to give the Otters their final lead at 74–72, but CSUMB went 0–for–4 from the field in the extra period to stifle hopes of a comeback after Scott's big baskets but the Hawks on top to stay.
CSUMB returns to action Sunday, Nov. 13 when it opens the season in earnest at the University of the Pacific. Tipoff at the Spanos Center is slated for 5 p.m.
