Otters Clinch, Make History In Chico

DII program record 17th victory clinches postseason bid

CHICO, Calif. — The 2025-26 Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team secured its place in history Saturday, earning both a record 17th win and a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament with a 70–54 victory over Chico State in Acker Gym.

With the victory, CSUMB (17–11 overall) clinched the No. 4 seed in the CCAA Championship Tournament, where it will face No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona (17–11) Thursday in Pomona's Kellogg Arena. The Otters earned the higher seed based on sweeping Pomona in the regular season.

Based on other results, the Otters would have advanced to the CCAA Tournament even without winning Saturday, but they left nothing to chance. They never trailed by more than a point in the first half and took control early in the second.

After the Wildcats tied the score at 27-all late in the first half, CSUMB finished the period with a 9–1 run to take a 36–28 lead into the lockerroom. The Otters slowly eased away early in the second half, claiming their first double-digit lead at 44–33 four minutes after intermission. They built their advantage to as many as 22 points before settling on the 16-point final margin.

Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) led a balanced Otter offense with 16 points. Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Australia) and Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) led a dominating afternoon on the glass with 13 and 11 rebounds respectively

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when an Evan Wells free throw gave the Otters a 63–44 lead with 4:25 remaining.

COME DANCING: The Otters have earned a trip the CCAA Championship Tournament for the fifth time in program history and the first time since 2022.

IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR: Both the Otter men's and women's basketball teams will be competing in the CCAA Championship Tournament together for the first time in program history. Like the men, CSUMB's women will be making their fifth CCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2013.

WHO SAID IT'S LONELY AT THE TOP? The top of the CCAA scoring chart is crowded with Otters. Both junior Jaden Tengan and sophomore Michael Mora finished tied for the CCAA scoring lead (in conference play) at 17.2 points per game. Including all games, Mora leads the league at 17.4 ppg while Tengan is second at 17.0 ppg.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits in Saturday's win at Chico State. This time, the honors went to: Michael Mora (16), Joey Bilello (11) and Jaden Tengan (11). It marked the 30th consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Michael Mora 16; REBOUNDS: Chol Deng 13; ASSISTS: Mezziah Oakman 3; BLOCKS: Mezziah Oakman 2; STEALS: Miki Gacic 3.

THE LAST WORD: "This regular season has been amongst the most rewarding in my career. Outside of a couple of key new pieces, this is largely the same group of guys that won just six games last season. It is hard to put into words the feeling I have seeing the fun they are having playing together through the ups and downs of the season. I hope they get a chance to keep this going for a while longer." — CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB heads south for the CCAA Championship Tournament quarterfinals Thursday, Mar. 5 at Kellogg Gym in Pomona, which was preselected as the host site for both the men's and women's tournament. The No. 4 seeded Otters will play No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona at 8 p.m. for the right to face No. 1 seed and No. 2 ranked nationally Cal State East Bay in the semifinals.
