Otter Run Ends At CCAA Tournament

Cal Poly avenges two losses with 74-67 win

POMONA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team might have seen its historic season end in the quarterfinals of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, as host Cal Poly Pomona avenged a pair of regular season losses to the Otters with a 74–67 victory Thursday night in Kellogg Arena.

The Otters (17–12 overall) entered Thursday's game ranked eighth in the latest West Region rankings. The Top eight teams in Sunday's final rankings will advance to next week's NCAA West Regional. Otters hopes dimmed significantly, however, considering Thursday's loss.

Junior guard Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) led all scorers with 27 points. Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB) added his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

That wasn't enough on this night, though, as Pomona led nearly start to finish. Tengan tied the game at 7–7 five minutes in with a 3-pointer, but it proved to be the final time the Otters would hold a share of the lead.

CSUMB didn't go down without a fight. Trailing by 17 with 5:30 remaining, the Otters pulled to within five at 72–67 on an Ashton Reese (Scottsdale, Ariz./UMBC) jumper with 25 seconds remaining. They had a chance to pull within three on their next possession, but, this time, a Reese 3-pointer wouldn't fall and Pomona was able to see the game out.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game wasn't statistically over until Demarreya Lewis-Cooper made a free throw that made the final score 74–67 with nine seconds remaining.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS: Despite Thursday's loss, the Otters have amassed 17 wins during the 2025-26 campaign, their most ever at the NCAA Division II level. The previous high of 16 wins came during the 2009 season. Ironically, the 16th win that season as a victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the semifinals of the CCAA Tournament.

MORA, TENGAN MAKE MORE HISTORY ON SEASON SCORING LIST: Jaden Tengan and Michael Mora moved up to No. 6 and No. 7 on the Otter single-season scoring list by scoring 27 and 13 points respectively. Tengan and Mora are the only Otter duo to in the Top 10 from the same season.

ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR OAKMAN: Center Mezziah Oakman went out with a bang, posting his team-leading eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. That ranks No. 5 all time in the Otter record book for double-doubles in a season. Only Charles Johnston (13 in 2024), Joe Mitchell (10 in 2008 and '09) and Dexter Amey (9 in 2001) sit above Oakman on that list.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona. This time, the honors went to: Jaden Tengan (27), Michael Mora (13) and Mezziah Oakman (13). It marked the 31st consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures as well as the first time the Otters did it in every game of a season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 27; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 14; ASSISTS: Five Otters 1; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello/Mezziah Oakman 1; STEALS: Michael Mora 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB technically still is alive fo an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. The NCAA selection show will be Sunday night, streamed live on NCAA.com
