SEASIDE, Calif. — The saying, “there's no place like home,” rang hollow for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team Thursday night as visiting Westminster College used an extra 15 trips to the free–throw line to upend the Otters 72–68 at The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (0–2 overall) got a career–high 25 points from junior swingman Derrick Anderson (Pittsburg HS), but it simply wasn't enough to overcome a 32–17 disparity from the stripe or a 10–foul differential that had the Otter big men in trouble from early in the game.

“We didn't get the win. I thought this was a step in the right direction, but we're not there yet” said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Bishop. “They're (Westminster) a good team. They'd do very well in our league.”

The teams traded leads through much of the first half until a 9–2 Westminster run broke a 24–24 tie and gave the Griffins a 33–26 edge. Brandon Ward (Riverside/Woodcrest HS) nailed a long three at the buzzer to pull the Otters to within 36–34 at the break, but CSUMB never got over the hump.

Westminster built its biggest lead at 59–48 with 6:30 remaining when the Otters made a valiant final push. Fouled shooting a three with 19 ticks remaining, freshman guard Jalen Headspeth (Oakland HS) made all three free throws to pull the Otters to within 68–65

Following a pair of AJ Reilly free throws for the Griffins, Ward dropped his second three of the night to make it 70–68 with nine seconds left. J.J. Campbell (Riverside/King HS) nearly gave the Otters an improbable chance at the win by tipping away the ensuing Westminster inbound pass, but Jake Orchard beat him to the loose ball and sank two more free throws to ice the game.

In addition to Anderson, Ward finished with 13 points and Kevin Loustale (Chico/Shasta College) grabbed a game–high nine rebounds for CSUMB.

Orchard led Westminster (7–1) with 18 points as one of three Griffins to finish in double figures.

CSUMB returns to The Kelp Bed floor for its final preconference game Tuesday, Nov. 22 when it host Cal Maritime for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
