FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay water polo opened its 2026 season in thrilling fashion, earning 13–12, double-overtime win agast Western Water Polo Association rival Biola University at the Fullerton Invitiational in Cal State Fullerton's Titan Aquatics Center Friday.

Friday's action also included a 25–6 setback against No. 6 ranked Long Beach State, leaving CSUMB with an opening day split.

The focus for the Otters, however, was squarely on the Biola match. Heading into Friday's match the Otters never had defeated Biola in 10 previous attempts. Four of the first 10 matches were decided by a single goal, making the Friday's win all the sweeter.

Junior Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) and sophomore Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) each recorded hat tricks for the Otters. Senior Kaya Eaton (Helix Charter HS)  added a pair of assists while sophomore goalkeeper Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) made 14 stops.

Neither team led by more than two goals. After the teams played to an 11–11 tie in regulation, CSUMB scored the only two goals in the first overtime period to take control. Biola clawed one back in the second OT before the Otter defense closed out the victory.

The match against title contender Long Beach state went to form, with the 49ers racing to an 8–1 in the first quarter and never looking back. Sosa scored a pair of goals to lead the CSUMB attack.

It's worth noting that White made a total of 20 saves Friday, giving her 275 for her career and moving her into the No. 9 spot on the Otter career saves list. She needs 11 more stop to pass Paige Robinson for the No. 8 spot.

The Otters will conclude play at the Fullerton Invitational with a pair of Saturday matches. The face Claremont-Mudd-Scipps Colleges at 9 a.m. and host Cal state Fullerton at 1 p.m.
