CHICO – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's and women's cross country teams both placed sixth at the CCAA Championships held at Hooker Oak Park.
"I am pleased with both programs' performances," CSUMB head coach
Greg Rhines said. "There were many pr's in the races, if only the course wasn't a little long. The women were very close to securing a place that had never been grabbed before. They will have another shot at it in two weeks. The men dug in very deep to pull out one of the best places ever for them. The teams are ready to rock up in Oregon."
On top of their performances on the trail, the Otters swept the Elite 13 Award in both championships, with
Cassidy Andreadakis and
Cameron Cornforth garnering the prestigious honor.
Andreadakis sports a 4.0 GPA in biology and Cornforth matches the unblemished 4.0 GPA in statistics.
"I am always amazed at what all student-athletes do each and every day in their academics, coupled with their chosen sport," Coach Rhines said. "I know that cross country and track and field practices and competitions can be quite challenging, with 50-80-mile weeks, and 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. practices, for starters. Then you add the special student-athletes who excel in their studies, and they truly are my heroes. What makes it even better is that Cassidy and Cameron are wonderful young people to boot. They are so deserving of this award."
