September 08, 2023

FULLERTON, Calif. — After competing against NCAA Division I competition in their season–opening meet last week, the Cal State Monterey Bay cross country teams responded with strong finishes at the Biola Invitational Friday at Ted Craig Regional Park.

The Otter women finished third in an 8–team field while the men finished fourth of 10 teams.

"The teams did well today against two nationally ranked programs," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "The conditions were challenging once again with heat, humidity and a squishy course. That being said, the teams came in ready for some results, and results are what they got, good results! There are a lot of new faces adjusting to collegiate running, and my veterans are doing a wonderful job showing them the ropes."

Junior Jaime Gonzalez (Camarillo HS) led the way with a fifth-place finish in the men's 8K race. His time of 25:23.7 is the 18th fastest in Otter history. Senior Connor Farrow (Modesto/Beyer HS) earned a Top 20 finish and just missed his PR by placing 15th in 25:54.2.

Sophomore Alex Fernandes (Doughtrey Valley HS) (32nd) and freshmen Jake Walton (Livermore/Granada HS) (41st) and William Trowbridge (Santa Cruz HS) (50th) also earned spots in the top half of the 116-runner field.

Junior Lisa Irvine (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) led the way for the Otter women once again, placing 14th amongst 94 runners in a 5K time of 19:08.1. Freshman Daniela Munguia (Clovis North HS) ran a strong race by finishing 19th in 19:24.7. Junior Angelee Berganio (Santa Calrita/Canyon HS) and sophomore Ali Keith (Billings, Mont./Billings West HS) also earned Top 25 finishes at 22nd (19:32.9) and 24th (19:39.8) respectively.

The Otters will take next week off from racing before returning to action Sept. 23 at the Cougar Challenge hosted by Cal State San Marcos.
