Otters Drop Both in Day One of UCSB Winter Invite

CSUMB Falls to No. 19 UCSB and No. 15 Wagner to open the Season

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. – The Cal State Monterey Bay water polo season kicked off Friday against a pair of nationally–ranked opponents at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite, where the Otters fell to No. 19 UCSB 14–0 and No. 15 Wagner College 23–5 at the UCSB Campus Pool.

Sophomore Abigail Summers (Visalia/Golden West HS) notched a hat trick against Wagner to lead the Otter offense. Amanda Bennett (Yorba Linda/El Dorado HS) and Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) both got involved in the scoring, with a goal each and a combined three assists.

Freshman Grace Mensing (Cameron Park/Ponderosa HS) and sophomore Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) split time in goal. Taylor tallied 29 saves over the two contests and Mensing added 19 stops and a team-high five steals.

The Otters will be back in the pool Saturday for another pair of matches in the UCSB Winter Invite. They'll take on Ottawa University of Arizona at 10:45 a.m. before closing their tournament schedule against No. 11 UC San Diego at 6:15 p.m.
