Otters Hang On Against Ottawa for First Win

Shelby Fortune’s five goals lead CSUMB to an 11-8 victory


SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. – Day two of the UCSB Winter Invite started out with a bang for the Otters, as they were able to notch win number one of the season over Ottawa University (Ariz.) by a score of 11–8 Saturday morning at the UCSB Campus Pool.

Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick henry HS) logged a career–best five goals to lead the Otters, to go along with an assist and a drawn exclusion. Amanda Bennett (Yorba Linda/El Dorado HS) and Abigail Summers (Visalia/Golden West HS) each enjoyed multi-goal games, with Bennett also adding two assists.

The Otters found themselves in an early 3–1 hole, but late first quarter goals by Bennett and Fortune tied the game and gave the Otters momentum heading into the second frame. 

CSUMB extended its lead to as many as four goals late in the third quarter before the Spirit roarded back to make it 9–8 with 3:19 to go. The Otters then turned to Fortune, who was able to score two more in the final 3:02 to push CSUMB across the finish line. 

Also enjoying strong games for the Otters were freshman Gabri Vincze (Newbury Park/Agoura HS), who passed three assists, and fellow freshman Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS), came up with three steals.

The Otters will return to the Otter Tank on Jan. 28 for their 2023 home opener against Santa Clara Santa Clara. First sprint is set for 1 p.m.
