Otters Grab First WWPA Win In Thriller At FPU

CSUMB rallies from 5-1 deficit to earn 11-10 win

FRESNO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team gathered some much needed momentum heading into the postseason by coming from behind to upend Fresno Pacific University 11–10 Saturday afternoon at the Sunnyside Aquatics Center.

The Otters got hat tricks from Catalina Gillis (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) and freshman Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) and four assists from Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS) to rally from deficits of 5–1 and 6–2 with a 6–goal third quarter that turned the tide CSUMB's way.

The Otters trailed 5–2 entering the second half when Fortune recorded a natural hat trick tie the game at 5–5. Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS) followed with the first of her two goals to give CSUMB its first lead at 6–5.

The lead changed hands twice before Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) and Ortega scored to end the third quarter and begin the fourth respectively, to put the Otters ahead for good at 9–7. FPU scored inside the final 10 seconds, but never got the ball back as CSUMB ran out the clock.

"It was the second half that turned the tide for us," says CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We came out with an intensity after halftime that allowed us to take control of the game on both ends of the pool. It was a great win."

Cecile Judy (Alameda HS) and Cali Havens (St. Lucy's Priory) also scored for CSUMB. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) made 14 saves and Rooney recorded three steals to lead the Otter defense.

The Otters will close the regular season with a trip to Cal State East Bay Apr. 15 before heading back to Fresno for the WWPA Tournament Apr. 22–24.
