Otters Fall In Final WWPA Tourney Tune-up

West Division champ Cal State East Bay earns 18-8 victory

HAYWARD, Calif. — Western Water Polo Association West Division champion Cal State East Bay pulled away in the second period then held visiting Cal State Monterey Bay at arm's length to earn an 18–8 victory Friday afternoon at Pioneer Pool.

CSUMB got a hat trick from Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS) and a pair of goals from Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS). Freshman Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) made 10 saves between the pipes.

Taylor now has 182 saves on the season, moving her past Sarah Ford (2010) and into ninth place in the Otter record book for saves in a season. Centis became the 13th player in Otter history to surpass 70 goals scored in her career with 71 after Friday's hatty.

Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) had a goal and three assists to tie Marisa Lovos (2016–19) for No. 4 on the Otter career assist list with 94. With at least three games remaining in the postseason, she will look to join Jack Walter (109 from 2011–13) as the only Otters ever to record 100 career assists.

Rooney also moved past Julie Cooper (2010–13) and into the Top 10 on the Otter career points list with 165.

As for Friday's game, the Otters kept in close early, but East Bay broke a 2–2 tie by scoring seven of the next eight goals. The Pioneer lead hovered between five and nine goals until they scored with 31 seconds left in regulation to claim their largest lead of the game.

CSUMB heads to Fresno to take part in the WWPA Championship Tournament starting Friday (Apr. 22) at Fresno Pacific University. First round seeds and game times will be announced next week.
