McKendree Scores Late To Take 13–12 Decision In WWPA Quarterfinals

Bears claim the last of seven lead changes with 15 seconds remaining

FRESNO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay dropped a heart-breaking 13–12 decision to McKendree University at the Western Water Polo Association Championship quarterfinals Friday at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.

The lead changed hands seven times, with McKendree scoring twice in the final 1:36 of regulation to claim the final comeback.

Senior Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) led the Otter offense with her third hat trick of the season and a pair of assists. Freshman Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) and senior Catalina Gillis (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) added two goals apiece.

CSUMB trailed early but battled back to forge a 6–6 tie by halftime. Goals by and Rooney and Gillis put the Otters up early in the second half. Fortune gave CSUMB its biggest lead at 10–7 with just under three minutes remaining in the third.

The Bears responded with four unanswered goals regain the lead at 11–10. Rooney scored her third of the game to tie it at 11 before Fortune converted from five meters to put the Otters up one finale time with 1:47 to play.

In addition to her offensive contributions, Rooney led the Otter defense with four steals, bringing her total to 40 for the season. She joins Alexis Davis and Julie Cooper as the only players in Otter history ever to record two 40–plus steal seasons. Rooney had 42 steals in 2019.

The Otters advance to the consolation bracket of the WWPA Championship Tournament where they will face Mercyhurst University Saturday at 9 a.m.
