Otters Score Season-High 15 Goals In Rout Of Mercyhurst

CSUMB wins 15-6 to advance to fifth place game at WWPA Championship

FRESNO, Calif -- Cal State Monterey Bay scored early and often to defeat Mercyhurst University 15-6 and advance to the fifth place game at the Western Water Polo Association Championship Tournament Saturday at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.

Nine different Otters scored in the onslaught, including five players who scored multiple goals. Sophomore Cecile Judy (Alameda HS) led the way with her second career hat trick. Catalina Gillis (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS), Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS), Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) and Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS) added two goals apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) recorded double-digit saves for the 13th time this season, finishing with 11, while allowing a season-low six goals.

Mercyhurst scored the game's first goal, but it was pretty much all Otters from that point. CSUMB led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 9-3 by halftime. The Otters scored the first three goals of the second half and the game was pretty much over.

The Otters advance to Sunday's fifth place game where they will play a season rubber match against Fresno Pacific. They teams split a pair of 1-goal games during the regular season, with each winning in the other's pool.
