Otters Finish Fifth In WWPA With 8-7 Win over FPU

CSUMB takes the third 1-goal decision of the season between the teams

FRESNO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay earned a fifth place finish at the WWPA Championship Tournament with another thrilling win over Fresno Pacific University, this time holding on late to take an 8–7 decision Saturday morning at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.

Freshman Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) recorded her first collegiate hat trick to lead the way for CSUMB. Senior Catalina Gillis (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) added a pair of goals in her final collegiate game.

Senior Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) also made her final collegiate game a memorable one. Offensively, she drew a career–high six exclusions that helped the Otters score three power play goals. On defense, she matched her career high with five steals.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) added 14 saves to backstop a defense that allowed its second fewest goals of the season.

CSUMB trailed 3–1 early but rallied to score four of the last five goals of the first half to take a 5–4 lead at intermission. The Otters never trailed in the second half as, each time Fresno pulled within a goal, CSUMB responded. Kaya Ortega's (Fullerton HS) strike with 2:48 remaining proved to be the match–winner.

"The win today was a great end to our season," says CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "The team had a strong showing at both end of the pool to close out the season."
