Chavez Leads Three Otters On All–CCAA Volleyball Teams

Sam Chavez named second team all–conference; Reeves, Vanderpan are honorable mention

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) earned second team honors to highlight three Cal State Monterey Bay student–athletes on the All–California Collegiate Athletic Association Volleyball teams announced by the conference late Wednesday evening.

Joining Chavez were senior outside hitter Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) and junior setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS/San Diego State) as honorable mention selections. They were the first All–CCAA awards for all three players.

"Congratulations to Chav, Lo and Ash!" says CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi, who was an All–CCAA performer herself as an Otter in 2007. "To have your play recognized by coaches within the conference is something to celebrate. We're excited for each of them and know they're grateful for the team as they are personally awarded this season."

Chavez finished third in the CCAA by averaging 4.30 digs per set, the No. 8 mark in CSUMB history. She was at her best in the biggest games, averaging 4.68 dps against nationally ranked opponents.

She finished her career with 855 digs, passing Materazzi this season to finish No. 11 on the Otter career digs list.

"Anyone who watched a match noticed the saves Chav would make. From the needed to the spectacular, she covered so much space," says Materazzi.

Reeves earned her first All–CCAA nod after posting the best season of her COVID–abbreviated career in 2022. She set career highs with 224 kills, 17 aces, 260.5 points and 90 digs. She ends her Otter career ranked No. 19 in total kills and No. 12 in kills per set.

Despite missing nearly a third of the season for health reasons, Vanderpan still made enough of an impression in her first CCAA campaign to earn a spot on the all–conference teams. She ended the season ranked No. 4 in the conference in assists per set. She also finished No. 2 on the team in digs per set (2.97) and No. 3 by averaging 0.27 aces per set.
