Otters Close Tournament With Heartbreaker

Otters win the first two sets but fall in five

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team saw its potential first win of the season slip away late as visiting Dominican University rallied from two sets down to take a 19–25, 18–25, 25–21, 25–22, 15–13 win Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

Senior opposite Abby Witzansky (North Torrance HS) led all attackers with a career-high 21 kills. Senior outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) added a 14-kill, 16-assist double double.

Peterson added a career-high six aces from the service line while junior libero Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) anchored the back row defense with a career-high 17 digs.

CSUMB led wire-to-wire in winning the first, set then scored nine of the final 12 points to pull away late in the second. Dominican turned the tables in the third, going wire-to-wire to extend the match.

The Otters had a great chance to pull out a tight fourth set before the Nighthawks broke a 22–22 tie by scoring the final three points. CSUMB then claimed six leads in a see-saw fifth, including holding a 13–12 edge, before conceding the final three points and the match.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters couldn't get a good swing on match point after leading 13–12 in the fifth.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TIME… Senior Abby Witzansky earned all-tournament hours after twice setting career highs for kills at the Otter Invitational. She finished the weekend with 52 kills (4.0 kps), three aces, seven blocks and 30 digs.

DIGGING A PERFECT 10… Abby Witzansky set her career high in all three matches this weekend with a trio of 10-dig performances. Combined with hitting performances of 12, 19 and 21 kills, they also completed the first three double-doubles of her collegiate career.

THEY'RE ACES… The led by a career-high six from Malia Peterson, Otters tied a school record with 16 aces Saturday versus Dominican University. They equaled the mark set originally against Westmont College on Sept. 8, 2023. It's worth noting that CSUMB's three highest totals for team service aces have come during Courtney Materazzi's tenure as head coach.

SHE'S ACES… Malia Peterson's six aces rank No. 3 on the Otter individual list for aces in a match. Lauren Reeves (2021) and Ashlynne Armstrong (2018) share the record with seven.

SETTING THE STANDARD… Maya Cann passed 78 assists this weekend to become the 11th player in Otter history to pass 700 career assists (711). She needs 75 more to catch Aly Fullbright for 10th place on the Otter career assist list.

MAKING HER POINT… Malia Peterson totalled 40.5 points over the weekend to vault up from 31st to 27th place on the Otter career points list with 454.5 points. She needs 20.5 points to catch Elizabeth Hanna for a spot in the Top 25.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Irvine for the Orange County Classic starting Friday (Sept. 4) when they'll square off with host Concordia University at 10 a.m.
