IRVINE, Calif. — Orange left a sour taste in Otter mouths when the Cal State Monterey bay volleyball team fell twice to open play at the Orange County Classic Friday in the CUI Arena on the campus of Concordia University.

CSUMB lost to Biola University in the tournament opener, 25–14, 25–18, 27–25 before falling to the host Golden Eagles, 25–18, 25–21, 25–14.

It took the Otters awhile to get things going in their morning meeting with Biola. After struggling in the first two sets, the Otters came on in the third, earning a set point at 24–23 before the Eagles clawed back to seal the win.

The Otters simply never found a rhythm against host Concordia and were forced to attempt to battle from behind early in all three sets. In the end, errors proved to be their undoing as 19 unforced hitting errors simply were too many to overcome.

Senior outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) led the offense Friday with eight kills in both matches. Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) totalled 10 kills while Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) led the net defense with four blocks.

THE BIOLA MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Eagle outside hitter Madison Moore put down four kills in five rallies to bring Biola back from 24–23 down to take the third set.

THE CONCORDIA MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Concordia opened the third set on a 12–4 run that the Otters couldn't counter.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… A pair of Otters made their debutante collegiate performances Friday in Irvine. Freshman outside hitter Milan Harvey (Bartlett, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian) played and got her first collegiate kill versus Biola. Freshman defensive specialist Gia Hoffman (Loomis/Del Oro HS) also saw her first action against the Eagles, collecting her first three digs as an Otter.
