Lions Rally To Tame Otters In Five

Bandle, Peterson led MB with 10 kills each

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Host Vanguard University rallied from 2–1 down to upend Cal State Monterey Bay 17–25, 25–18, 23–25, 25–16, 15–4 Saturday in Vanguard's Freed Center.

For the third time this season, a pair of Otters reached double-figure kills in the same match, with seniors Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) both recording 10 kills. Junior libero Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) reached double figures in digs for the third time in six matches, finishing with 14 while adding a career-high five aces.

CSUMB appeared to be on its way early, racing to a 9–3 lead in the first set before stiff-arming Vanguard the rest of the way to comfortably open a 1–0 lead. An early run gave the Otters a 13–8 lead in the second set when things when sideways.

The Lions responded with a 12–1 burst to take a 20–14 lead on their way to leveling the match at 1–1. The Otters temporarily righted the ship by pulling out a 25–23 win in a third set that was as tight as the final score indicated.

But the end of the third set would be the final lead CSUMB would taste Saturday. Vanguard use its second 12–1 run of the afternoon to pull away early in the fourth en route to tying the match. The Lions finished the deciding set with a 13–2 flourish to seal their first win of 2026.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a pair of Otter attack errors broke a 2–2 tie in the fifth. That sparked the 13–2 Vanguard finish that ended the match.

SHE'S ACES… Junior Macey Camacho served a career-high five aces Saturday at Vanguard University. She is the second Otter to serve five or more aces this season (Malia Peterson served six against Dominican on Aug. 29). Even though we're only six matches into the season, it already marks just the eighth time in program history that two different Otters have served five or more aces during a match in a single season..

PETERSON PASSES 400 KILLS… With 26 kills at this weekend's Orange County Classic, Malia Peterson became the 23rd player in Otter history to surpass 400 career kills. She'll enter next week's CCAA opener at Cal Poly Pomona ranked No. 21 all-time with 416. She needs five more to pass Lauren Reeves (2019-22) for a spot in the Top 20.

BANDLE ON THE BLOCKS, CENTURY CLUB EDITION… With six blocks assists at the Orange County Classic, Lilly Bandle became the 23rd player in Otter history to pass 100 for her career. She enters next week with 101 and needs 13 more to pass Hilary Heath for a spot in the Top 20.

PETERSON MAKES HER POINTS… With 31.0 points this weekend, Malia Peterson passed Mykayla Nolte (2021-24), Elizabeth Hanna (2008-09) and Baylie Pierson (2017-19) to move into 23rd place on the Otter career points list with 485,5. She needs 14.5 points to become the 22nd player in CSUMB history to reach 500 career points.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head right back to SoCal to begin CCAA play next weekend. They'll open against defending CCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona Friday (Sept. 11) before moving down I-10 to face 2024 NCAA Champion Cal State L.A. Saturday.
