Broncos Hold Off Strong Otter Effort

CSUMB puts scare in No. 17 ranked team

POMONA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played arguably its best match of the season, but it wasn't enough to tame 2-time defending CCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona, as the No. 17 Broncos fought for a 25–23, 25–23, 25–20 win Friday evening in Kellogg Arena.

CSUMB got 12 kills and two aces from senior outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS), while senior setter Sofia MacPherson (Pleasant Grove HS/Feather River College) passed a career-high 28 assists.
The Otters were on their way to an upset early after taking a 19–15 lead in the opening set. Pomona rallied with a 6–0 run to re-take the lead before CSUMB came back to tie it at 22-all.

CSUMB appeared to take a 23–22 lead when an officials' video review overturned a kill by Peterson to give Pomona the edge. Keira Limbrick then served a back-breaking ace off the tape and the Broncos held on for the set.

The Otters trailed 24–18 late in the second set when a Peterson kill and a Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) solo blcok sparked a 5–0 run that got them to with a point before Pomona once again held on.

Pomona raced to a 7–1 lead to open the third frame and led 20–12 before the Otters found enough in reserve for one final charge. Two kills each by Peterson and Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) help CSUMB pull within four before an Elle Walker kill ended the final comeback.
 

FRIDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… After an official video review took a point away from the Otters to give Cal Poly a 23–22 lead in the first set, Keira Limbrick served a hard-luck ace off the tape to give the Broncos a 24–22 lead they'd defend for the win.

MacPHERSON LENDS A HAND… Senior setter Sofia MacPherson needed just three sets to establish her career high Friday might, finishing with 28 assists. Her previous best was 20 assists in a 5-setter versus Dominican University on Aug. 29.

PETERSON CRACKS THE TOP 20… With 12 kills Friday at Cal Poly Pomona, Malia Peterson passed Lauren Reeves (2019-22) for the No. 20 spot on the Otter career kills list with 428. Next up is Mollin Hellfrich (2019-22) with 431. She need 72 more to become the 17th player in Otter history to reach 500 career kills.

BANDLE ON THE BLOCKS, SOLO EDITION… With two solo blocks Friday in Pomona, Lilly Bandle moved up to 18th place on the Otter career list at 26. She is one behind teammate Malia Thorne for No. 17 on that list.

PETERSON ON PRECIPICE OF 500 POINTS… With 14.0 points Friday in Pomona, Malia Peterson moved to the precipice of becoming the 22nd player in CSUMB history to reach 500 career points. She'll enter Saturday's match at Cal State L.A. with 499.5 points.
