L.A. Rallies Back To Beat Otters In Four

Witzansky leads three in double figures with 16 kills

LOS ANGELES — Another strong start by the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team wasn't enough to hold off a traditional power as 2023 NCAA Champion Cal State L.A. rallied from a first set loss to earn a 21–25, 25–16, 25–17, 25–20 win Saturday afternoon in L.A.'s University Gym.

CSUMB put three attackers in double figures for the first time this season, with senior opposite Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) leading the way with 16 kills. Freshman Milan Harvey (Bartlett, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian/MPC) reached double figures for the first time as an Otter with 14 while Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) chipped in 10.

The teams played through 15 ties and nine lead changes in the opening frame before Maya Giannini (Palma HS) served a pair of aces to help break a 20–20 tie and lead the Otters to the early match lead.  But an early 10–0 run gave the Golden Eagles control in the second set en route to leveling the match.

The Otters led midway through the third set before L.A. used a series of small runs to ease away late for the win. A Witzansky kill tied the fourth set at 18-all before the Golden Eagles finished with a 7–2 run to secure the win.

In addition to the Otter hitters, Sofia MacPherson (Sacramento/Pleasant Grove HS) passed a career-high 44 assists. Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) led the defense with 15 digs.
 

FRIDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… Juliana Speiski served an ace to break a 12–12 tie in the decisive third set. Although the Otters kept things interesting, they never held a lead in the match from that point forward.

DOUBLE THE FUN FOR ABBY… With 16 kills Saturday in L.A., Abby Witzansky reached double figures for the fourth time this season. That matches her sophomore campaign of 2024 for the most double-figure matches of her career.

MacPHERSON LENDS A HAND… Senior setter Sofia MacPherson set her career high in assists for the second consecutive match, finishing with 44 helpers Saturday at Cal State L.A. She passed a then career-high 28 the previous night in Pomona.

THE MOST ASSISTS SINCE… The 44 assists by Sofia MacPherson were the most in a 4-set road match by an Otter since Ashley Vanderpan passed 46 in a win over the University of Wilmington on Sept. 2, 2022.

PETERSON PASSES 500 POINTS… With 11.5 points Saturday in L.A., Malia Peterson became the 22nd player in CSUMB history to reach 500 career points. She'll enter next week with 511.0 points. She needs 10.0 points to pass Tiffaney Riggs (2008-11) for 21st place and 58 points to pass Mollin Helfrich (2019-22) for a spot in the Top 20.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Their 5-match roadtrip concluded, the Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp bed to host Cal Poly Humboldt (Sept. 18) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (Sept. 19). First serve both evenings will be at 5 p.m.
